Finita l’università nel 2000, Benjamin ha iniziato a viaggiare attraverso i tre continenti: Europa, America e Australasia. Durante il viaggio tra l’America e l’Australia quando ha oltrepassato la linea internazionale del cambio di data, ha perso un giorno.
Dal quel momento è sempre stato affascinato dal concetto di tempo, spazio e vuoto.
Mentre viveva nella città di Varsavia in Polonia nel 2008, Benjamin ha fondato The Yuri Gagarin Contraband dopo avere scritto una poesia intitolata “On the corner of Yuri Gagarin and Space Row A”, un progetto musicale che condivide le speranze, i sogni, gli incubi e le paure del primo uomo che ha circumnavigato la terra dallo spazio attraverso un mezzo audiovisivo.
Cresce così, nella mente di Benjamin Shilling, il progetto #Kosmonaut, come naturale prosecuzione di queste idee in cui parole, musica e immagini sono correlate per comunicarci diversi significati e diversi momenti durante un’esperienza dal vivo.
“Occupy Space” si riferisce, in termini di linguaggio, allo spazio vuoto tra il dire cosa intendiamo e il significato di ciò che diciamo.
“Occupy Space” simboleggia la base dalla quale dovremmo prendere delle responsabilità che derivano dal nostro diritto di avere la libertà di parola.
E significa che il nostro rapporto con lo spazio deve essere rivisto in modo che ‘occupare uno spazio’ significhi entrare più in contatto con quello che ci circonda.

is the brainchild of Benjamin Shilling who was born in the U.K in 1977.
Upon graduating from university in 2000, Ben travelled across the three continents of Europe, America and Australasia. The trip meant circumnavigating the globe in an anti-clockwise direction which resulted in losing a day when crossing the International date line from the USA to Australia.
There began a fascination with the concept of time, space and the void.
While living in the city of Warsaw in Poland in 2008 a poem entitled “On the corner of Yuri Gagarin and Space Row A” led to the creation of The Yuri Gagarin Contraband, a musical enterprise sharing the hopes, dreams, nightmares and fears of the first man to circumnavigate the earth from space via an audio-visual medium.
#Kosmonaut is a continuation of these ideas where words, music and images correlate to communicate different meanings at different moments in a live setting.
“Occupy Space” refers to a sensibilty in terms of language which is concerned with the void between saying what we mean and meaning what we say. It symbolises a foundation from which we need to take some of the responsibility that comes with our right to have freedom of speech.
Our relationship with space needs to be re-examined and it follows that by occupying space we will be more in touch with our surroundings.
